Over the summer, as The World Cup progressed and Manchester United fans watched their new manager in action, a big subject of debate was who Louis van Gaal might bring with him from the Dutch squad to Old Trafford.
As it turned out, only Daley Blind was acquired from a youthful and promising group. Few would complain about the quality that he has brought to the Manchester United midfield.
But many assumed that the Holland squad would also be plundered for one or more of its defenders to fill the gaps left by major departures from Old Trafford. Chief amongst them was Bruno Martins Indi.
Big, mobile, quick and with decent feet, we thought he might be just the ticket. But LvG may have wanted more experienced recruits and the lad went to Porto instead.
But reports today suggest that Manchester United may swoop for the player after all, at the inflated figure of £10m. The Sun says:
LOUIS VAN GAAL wants to beef up his flagging defence with a £10million January bid for Porto centre-back Bruno Martins Indi.
We could see this one happening last summer but we can’t imagine United going in for him now. Louis van Gaal is waiting for world class defenders to come along and this lad isn’t in that category. He’s a good player but LvG’s pursuit of Thomas Vermaelen last summer suggests that experience is what he’s after.
Let’s see him in action. Manchester United fans: can you see this one happening?
