Tottenham: £170k a week? You must be having a laugh

Emmanuel_Adebayor

Crazy

We all know the sick song about Emmanuel Adebayor. But truth of the matter is that, unless the player despises his mother, she surely doesn’t need a job at all.

Because, reading the reviews of the season so far in The Telegraph today we were reminded that the Togo international is on £170k a week at Tottenham! What? How? Who?

This figure may have been negotiated downwards somewhat since he joined Spurs permanently but the figures are still astronomical for such a player.

We really liked the player in his early career. At Arsenal he matured into a really dangerous striker. Moves to Manchester and Madrid followed before he went to Tottenham in 2011, where he has scored goals on a fairly regular basis.

But, even by 2014 prices, for that sort of wage you should expect a world beater – someone who scores almost every week and who the entire team is built around. Sadly that’s not the case with Adebayor and Tottenham have once more paid over the odds.

41 goals on 106 in all competitions isn’t a bad conversion. But he scored 18 of those 41 in his first season at Spurs when he was still on loan and clearly trying to impress.

24 goals in the following two and a bit seasons tells you that if Tottenham could have offloaded him by now then they probably would.

At 30 years of age you would imagine that this is the last big pay day for the lad – in England anyway. We would imagine he will move abroad after this stint to sign another big money contract in a lesser league. America perhaps?

But, all in all, Adebayor has to be seen as a hugely expensive and pretty bad investment by Daniel Levy and Tottenham.

Spurs fans: would you rather see Harry Kane up top from now on?

He’s on £100k/wk. he was I. £160k for the first year and that was topped up by Man City. He had 1 yr left on his contract and refused to leave because he was on £170 there and was offered £100 at Spurs. To get rid City confirmed they would make up the difference for what would have been the remainder of his city context. Once that finished he was only getting the £100k Spurs paid him

I think he is getting approx £90k p/w from Spurs. City gave him one off payment when he joined Spurs to account for his “loss of earnings” which takes his total package to approx £170k! Even £90k is a waste of money for a lazy, hit and miss (more miss) player!

Man City still pay Spurs money towards his wages. Otherwise Levy wouldn’t have bought him. Check your facts!

He is not on £170k/w. His subsidy from Man City has finished now, they topped up his wages to what he was on there to get rid. His contract at Man City would’ve finished last season so that’s when the subsidy finished. Is now on £110k/w. Still £110k/w too much.

It’s my understanding that Adebayor was on £170k a week until last season, when his contract would have run out at Man City, had he stayed with them.
Spurs wages structure means their top earners are on £80k a week.
As part of signing on, Man city agreed to pay the the extra £90k, to top up his wages, until his contract would have run out with them.
His current wages are £80k a week, in line with Spurs top earners.
No way would Spurs pay anyone £170k a week.

I believe Man City covered a huge chunk of his wages. However when that was up, Spurs paid a lump sum to Man City, Man City paid that to Adebayor, and Spurs paid Adebayor whatever he is on now which is less than £170k p w by a long shot. For sure Adebayor has not lost out.

As usual the supporters of the club know far more than these internet hacks that write about it, nothing new there!
