Manchester United’s awful start to the season has only increased fears from fans that many of the players at the club are simply not good enough. While the team have problems in all areas of the pitch, with the possible exception of strikers, one of biggest concerns is in central midfield.
Fans have been crying out for talented midfielders for a number of years. In that time The Red Devils have only brought in Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera. Meanwhile they allowed Paul Pogba to leave the club in 2012, with the Frenchman having matured into a fine player with Juventus.
To that end, The Daily Star reports that Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is considering a surprising £20 million bid for Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen.
The 24-year-old has failed to nail down a regular place in the Liverpool starting eleven, usually limited to making appearances from the bench or in the case of injury to other players. With Liverpool’s further investment during the summer, Allen is even more unlikely to make the first team on a regular basis opening up the possibility of a transfer to get more football.
Quite why Manchester United would bid £20m for a player who was signed for £15m and can’t get a game is anyone’s guess. But The Star reckons:

MANCHESTER UNITED are considering a shock swoop for Liverpool’s Joe Allen.
Allen joined Liverpool from Swansea City in 2012 for a £15 million fee following a promising season in The Premier League for the Welsh outfit. He had previously spent five years at Swansea, making 150 appearances in all competitions, as well as one month at Wrexham on a short-term loan deal.
