Report: Odds slashed, terms agreed, shirt signed, bags packed, player wants dream move, tweet hurriedly deleted – when, for the love of all that is good, will Arturo Vidal sign for Manchester United?

What the dickens

He’s been on ridiculously short odds to come to Manchester United for weeks – 1/10 at the latest count.

He reportedly agreed personal terms some time ago.

He’s has implied publicly that he wants to come to Manchester United.

‘I’m enjoying my holidays, and when I return to Italy I’ll see what happens.

‘I’m very calm, but anyone would love to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world.’

He’s easily the best available midfielder on the market.

He’s even signed a United shirt.

So why on earth has Arturo Vidal still not joined the club?

Three possible reasons:

Massive bungling from Ed Woodward

Despite the fact that his track record in the job so far is awful, he still has that gleeful, self-satisfied look etched into his face. Perhaps it was his plan all along to do Manchester United’s main business in the last few days of the window. But we very much doubt it.

The Glazers apprehensive about shelling out

It leaves a sickening taste in the mouth just to mention the name of these football anti-christs. They arguably haven’t even spent the Ronaldo money from 2009 yet. Possibly more precisely, they have spent it, but to service the debt which they have riddled a once financially potent club with.

In the 3 years before The Glazers Manchester United signed Ferdinand, Ronaldo, Rooney, Van Der Saar, Louis Saha

Best signings in the 9 years since? Vidic (£7m), Evra (£5.5m), Tevez (free), Van Persie

The dodgy knee?

This too could be salient. Manchester United won’t want to pay up to £47m for another player who will be sidelined for months on end, like the hapless Hargreaves. But it doesn’t take 3 months to decide if someone has a dodgy knee. Get a scan. Get the best physios and consultants in to look at it. Make a decision. Job done. One day.

We just feel sorry for Manchester United fans right now. If they don’t get at least one big name in before September all hell is going to break loose.

No pressure then Ed….
