Crunch time

With less than three weeks before the transfer window closes Manchester United once more find themselves in the unenviable position of trying to do most of their business just before the deadline.

It was always going to be a difficult summer due to Louis van Gaal’s pressing business at The World Cup, which wasn’t concluded until the second week of July.

He has arguably done the right thing in properly assessing his squad before entering the transfer market. But one would now hope that he can wield his authority, kudos and charisma to do some deals quickly.

If reports are to be believed then Manchester United have five major targets. There will probably be a couple surprises as well, as the window draws to a close – especially if top targets aren’t snared. We assess the likelihood of United signing each of the major targets.

Juan Cuadrado – Chelsea and Barcelona could also be interested in the player, so Manchester United are going to need to offer more money, more wages and first-team guarantees to the player. But he’s well worth every penny because he would immediately improve the first team. Signing likelihood 3/5

Daley Blind – Blind is an excellent footballer but he’s admitted that he is not the most physical player and may struggle in The Premier League as a consequence. But he was never designed as a battle-axe. Instead he’s more of an artist and someone who could play in several positions for Manchester United. This adaptability makes him an interesting target. 3/5

Mats Hummels – this guy would be a fantastic addition to a Manchester United team which lacks authority in the centre of the defence. Manchester United also need extra numbers at centre back so they surely have to sign at least one. Hummels has been made club captain at Dortmund so is his signing looks less likely. 2/5

Angel Di MariaLouis van Gaal has admitted that he really likes the player over the weekend and although Manchester United don’t really need a forward as much as they need defenders, Di Maria may well turn out to be the marquee signing of the summer. 3/5

Arturo Vidal – Manchester United have rarely been known for their quick movement in the transfer market but you do feel this one would have been done by now if the club didn’t have reservations about the ing term fitness of the player. If those fears can be assuaged then we still think Vidal will join Manchester United. 4/5

Let’s take a look at Di Maria action. Manchester United fans would it be worth the outlay?
