The signing of Mathieu has clearly gone some way to solidifying Barcelona’s defence. But there is seldom smoke without fire in the transfer market and Barcelona have been persistently linked with additional defenders this summer.
Having spent so much money on the forward areas of the squad you do feel that Barcelona need to add at least one more player to a defence which was culpable for too many soft goals last season.
The latest name on the radar is the man mountain Jerome Boateng of Bayern München.
Having had an indifferent spell at Manchester City a couple of years ago Boateng moved back to Germany and has excelled for the European champions.
Barcelona will certainly not find it easy to sign the player and, if they do, the money being mooted is astronomical.
Jerome Boateng, the Bayern Munich defender, has become Barcelona’s number one target. Although Jeremy Mathieu arrived a couple of weeks ago, the ‘Azulgranas’ still want to strengthen the centre of their defence with another player, and the German player has become the top mark to fill this vacancy, in a development that was first uncovered by Radio Marca.
The German, who recently won the World Cup with his national side, has been valued by his club at €39 million.
Boateng is an amazing physical specimen and someone that simply exudes authority. But, if we held the Barcelona purse strings, we would be apprehensive to spend that amount of money on a player who wasn’t deemed vital enough to Manchester City to keep him a couple of years back. He may struggle to adapt to Spain in the same way that he, arguably, did in England.
He’s got decent feet but power and sheer physicality are his great assets. We think that, while he would be a good player for Barcelona they could probably buy an equally good defender for less money.
Let’s take a look at Boateng in action. Barcelona fans: would he be worth all that money?
