Tottenham are reportedly preparing a surprise bid for German winger Julian Draxler.
With their new manager looking to build a squad in a similar mould to his previous side at Southampton, the club are looking to bring the exciting youngster to the club with a bid of around £17 million according to The Metro.
Tottenham are set to make a £17million bid for Schalke play-maker Julian Draxler as the club kick-on with their transfer plans.
However, this would fall well short of the buy-out clause Schalke have in the 20 year old’s contract, believed to be £38 million.
The winger has previously been linked with Arsenal. Reports have suggested Arsenal have made bids this transfer window as well as in January. However, these attempts at securing his signature were unsuccessful.
Draxler revealed in June that he personally turned down a move to Arsenal in January in order to continue his development at Schalke. He also said that he intends to remain at the German side in the 2014/15 season, suggesting that Tottenham will have their work cut out in order to persuade him to move to England.
“I will do the same this summer. I want to play one year more in Schalke.”
The 20 year old has been considered one of the brightest young talents playing in Europe over the last few seasons. Since breaking into the Schalke side in 2011, he has gone on to make over 100 league appearances, finding the net 15 times.
He has been capped 12 times for the German national side and was picked as part of the squad for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, though has only featured as a late substitute in the shocking 7 – 1 win over Brazil.
Tottenham fans would likely welcome the addition of the exciting German into their side. After selling Gareth Bale last season to Real Madrid the club invested in a number of players who have underwhelmed for the most part.
After a disappointing season they will be hoping to move forward under new manager Mauricio Pochettino. Signing Draxler would prove a huge statement of intent.
