You could argue that Manchester United need to strengthen many areas of their side.
The defensive areas and the flanks look in serious need of reinforcements.
But, going forward, Manchester United surely can’t be competitive in the league and in Europe again unless they sign a new midfield general of serious quality and personality – someone who can control the tempo of the game, stamp his authority on big matches and and pull Manchester United through the tough ties with determination, athleticism and leadership skills.
Various players have been mentioned over the last few months in relation to this midfield problem.
But, for our money, one of the best and most gettable options is Kevin Strootman of Roma.
He’s only been at Roma for one season, and injured for a big chunk of that time, but his links to the Dutch national squad and Louis van Gaal could put Manchester United in pole position to sign him.
And, in a potentially encouraging turn of events, The Independent reported last night that Juventus may privately have decided to sell the player, if the right price comes in for him.
And that price, according to the report, is £28 million. The Independent said:
Kevin Strootman could be on his way to Manchester United after Roma softened their stance on the Dutch midfielder.
The Dutch midfielder was previously not for sale at any cost, but Gazzetta dello Sport say Roma have changed their minds.
Director of Football Walter Sabbatini is privately willing to entertain offers of around €35million (£28m).
There are several options out there, in terms of really good quality central midfielders, but we feel this could be the best. At 24 years of age he has the best years of his career ahead and we think he would suit Manchester United down to the ground. He’s the perfect box to box midfielder to add dynamism and dominate the centre of the park once more. He also chips in with a few goals (6 in 28 before injury last season). Roma got the player for around £15m and Manchester United may have to double that to secure Strootman. But he’s worth every penny.
Let’s have a look at the lad in action. Manchester United fans: would this be the best solution for that hole in the midfield?
