With only a month or so, after the World Cup, for the new Manchester United manager to plan for the next season it’s difficult to know where he will enter the transfer market first.
Last week there were reports that LvG has asked Ed Woodward to target the powerful German trio of Hummels, Schweinsteiger and Thomas Muller.
Each would be difficult to get in their own way – especially the München players.
But there was a suggestion in the last week that Bayern might be prepared to let Bastian Schweinsteiger go. With an embarrassment of riches in the middle of the park, the 29-year-old may feel that he has one big contract left him at another club.
He’s won it all with München and, at 29, may decide it’s time for a new challenge away from Germany. German players generally travel well and some like to test themselves in different leagues.
With the reports of Manchester United’s potential interest the club has been installed as favourites with Skybet to sign Schweinsteiger up this summer. At odds of 3/1 to join Manchester United before the window closes The Red Devils are well clear of the rest in terms of the bookie’s feelings about a potential transfer.
Even at his age the German has so much to offer a Manchester United side that is desperately in need of a personality in the centre of the park. Schweinsteiger wouldn’t just bring great experience and nous to the engine room either. He’s also someone who can score goals – 40 for Bayern and 23 for Germany in over 100 caps.
If he could play for another couple of years at the top he might offer Manchester United the best possible short-term route back to the top of the league.
Let’s remind ourselves of the quality of the lad in action.
