With all the speculation flying around during the summer months it’s sometimes hard to decant the truth from the myth about who might come to Manchester United.
By a process of deduction it’s safe to assume that Manchester United will be adding defenders – few teams in the world could easily deal with the loss of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic in the same season.
Manchester United do, of course, have the well-established Jonny Evans to call on, plus the blossoming talents of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, who some see as the future centre-back pairing for England. But Manchester United will surely buy at least one more central defender this summer to cope with the demands of a long season in The Premier League.
Many names have been thrown around over the last few weeks and the latest favourites for the roles seem to be Mats Hummels and Bruno Indi Martins. But Miranda was supposed to be joining Manchester United last week and the speculation will probably move on again before August.
Rather surprisingly SkyBet have Manchester United as favourites to sign Thomas Vermaelen if he leaves Arsenal this summer, at odds of 4/1.
The Belgian, who used to captain the national team until Vincent Kompany took the armband a few years back, hasn’t had a great run at The Emirates over the last couple of years as Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker have been pre-eminent, in the last 12 months particularly.
Arsene Wenger would probably want to keep the player as cover but he may agitate for a move this summer – Vermaelen is probably too good a player to be sitting on the bench. A ball playing centre-back with two feet and an eye for goal, he can consider himself more than a tad unlucky to be gettings splinters on his bum in a World Cup year.
He’s certainly decent enough to be starting for a Premier League side – whether he’s good enough for Manchester United remains to be seen.
But he had got great experience, lovely feet and decent pace about. He may not represent the Hollywood option for Manchester United but he could turn out to be an absolute bargain for a team suddenly shorn of two great players.
Let’s see him in cation. Manchester United fans: good enough?
