Brendan Rodgers will hope that this doesn’t end up as being the one that got away.
Because recent reports suggest that Manchester United are now interested in The Merseysiders’ long-term target Yevhen Konoplyanka.
And it is very easy to see why. Manchester United have of course traditionally been a side that loves to attack with width. But the quality on their flanks has eroded over the last four or five years to the point that they now need serious reinforcements if they want to continue with a successful 4-4-2 formation.
Whilst, Konoplyanka can play anywhere across the front line or in attacking midfield, he slots in beautifully as a wide man with great pace, trickery and a good final ball. He also contributes his fair share of goals – 13 in 34 this season – and really does now look like a seasoned international footballer.
It was supposed to be Liverpool’s major deal of the January transfer window and could well have taken them over the line in the title hunt – not that their failed challenge had much to do with alack of goals – but the deal broke down at the last.
The Guardian reports Wednesday that Manchester United are now pursuing a player as well.
And the player’s agent has told the media that Manchester United are indeed interested:
Almost everyday, I receive more than 5 calls from my colleagues asking about Konoplyanka.
Information that Liverpool are not interested in him is untrue. If English clubs make an offer, he’s likely to accept.
Recently there’s been increased interest in Konoplyanka from Man United. Their representatives have watched several games.
In the case of Manchester United, Konoplyanka understands that he will lose the opportunity to play Champions League.
Recently, there have been active calls from Schalke. If famous foreign clubs stop their interest, he’d stay here.
Tottenham have also been credited with an interest in the past and we think that he will definitely make a move from Dnipro this summer.
The way his agent has been touting him it seems just a matter of time before a transfer.
Both the Merseyside outfit and Tottenham will surely retain an interesting player and it will be interesting to see where he finally ends up. We think that he is becoming a really top player.
Let’s see him in action. Manchester United fans: can this guy do the damage out wide for the club next season?
