Optimistic as we are we thought we should root around for some positive news for Manchester United fans ahead of Bayern Munchen, by way of a rallying call – a battle cry.
Because, whilst pretty much everyone assumes that Bayern will walk this game over two legs, it is only because people think of Manchester United in its current pickle. So here is the good news for Manchester United:
Thiago Alcantara – is out of both legs, in all likelihood. After an indifferent start to life at Bayern he has grown into the team and played 25 games in all competitions. He’s the sort of highly creative midfielder that has been finding too much space against Manchester United all season.
The History – Since 1999 Manchester United haven’t beaten Bayern Munich. They went out in the quarters to the Germans in 2001 and 2010. But the ghost of 1999 must surely still play on the minds of the club. It will remain etched in the memories of Bayern forever. They can’t help but think of United as a bogey team after that fateful night. Perhaps Manchester United will get a slice of luck again tonight.
Manchester United – Ryan Giggs echoed soccersweep’s sentiments when he reminded everyone in yesterday’s press conference that form is temporary but class permanent. Bayern aren’t playing against some team that is lucky to be in the quarters. They are playing against a side who has appeared in 3 of the last 6 finals. Had they not come up against the best club side ever in two of those games then we might be talking about a club with 5 European Cups.
Manchester United retain much of the experience of those squads and, although creaking in some areas, there is no reason to believe that the likes of Ferdinand, Carrick and Rooney can’t summons the requisite level of quality to hurt the opposition.
If Manchester United want to get through this huge tie they are going to have to remember that they are Manchester United. Go out to win the game with an attacking line up. Forget the strengths of the opposition and concentrate on their own game. Because Manchester United should expect to win at Old Trafford.
