Manchester United made favourites to sign goal machine this month

Just like Arsenal did with the signing of Mesut Ozil in August Manchester united have, in one fell swoop, signalled their intention to spend in order to compete with the best.

The signing of the brilliant Spaniard Juan Mata really does feel like the beginning of something big for Manchester United. They had been linked with so many players during January but so few of them seemed prepared to leave their clubs in the winter window.

The signing of Mata really does feel like an ice-breaker and we wouldn’t be at all surprised if Manchester United invested again before the month is out.

David Moyes was in Germany over the weekend and rumours suggest that he was there to see three players in particular – Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Patrick Herrmann, plus Toni Kroos and Mario Mandzukic of Bayern.

The latter has had some issues in terms of renewing his contract and The Daily Mail said last week:

David Moyes will take his seat at Borussia-Park on Friday night for Borussia Monchengladbach’s game with Bayern Munich and take a close look at a familiar face in Mario Mandzukic.

That news has alerted the bookmakers to a potential move in January. Skybet have now opened up a market on a Mandzukic transfer. Manchester United have been installed as favourites for his signature at odds of 5/1. Arsenal come in second favourites at 6/1.

If Manchester United do buy another striker we would imagine that this would mean the end for either Javier Hernandez or Danny Welbeck. Considering Welbeck is a Manchester lad you would have thought that the Mexican would be most at risk of losing his place in the squad.

The Croatian international been on fire, scoring 25 goals in 40 games, since he joined the club in 2012. He also has a creditable 13 goals in 46 games for his national team. Let’s have a look at Mandzukic in action. Manchester United fans – keen on the Croatian?
