Manchester United fans are currently scouring the sports pages feverishly on a daily basis, in the hope that the club will bring in some inspiring players, to make a push for the Champions League spot that they so desperately need.

To that end, this transfer speculation won’t exactly have fans dribbling. Nevertheless Manchester United are looking for improvements in several areas of the squad and The Mirror today reports that they might be after a new goalkeeper as an understudy to the superb David De Gea.

The Mirror Says:

Manchester United bid for Vito Mannone as Sunderland chase Mariano Andujar transfer

Manchester United have made contact with Sunderland over goalkeeper Vito Mannone, according to Gazetta dello Sport.

The Italian sports daily claim that David Moyes is interested in bringing in former Arsenal keeper Mannone as back-up to David De Gea.

Mannone is a decent stopper – the 25 year old was let go by Arsenal after 7 years at the club, but has done well in his 11 appearances so far for Sunderland this season – but you would have thought that the keeper position would be the last thing on Moyes mind right now. Manchester United boast on of the best in the world in David De Gea and, although Anders Lindegaard has had some dubious performances, he has generally done a decent job when called upon.

So we would say to David Moyes that, if there is any substance in this tale, get yourself back out on the search for midfielders mate. Manchester United need pass masters and playmakers if they are going to get anywhere near the top four this season.
