Most Manchester United fans are crying out for midfield reinforcements for the team. The feeling amongst many fans is that if David Moyes doesn’t add quality to his engine room in the next couple of weeks then United won’t qualify for the Champions League next season.

But the defence has looked a little bit dodgy at times also and reports today suggest that Manchester United are close to a deal for a player who has been persistently linked with the club over the last couple of years. The bad news is that it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen in Janaury.

The Metro says that Manchester United’s pursuit of Argentinian defender Ezequiel Garay is about to come to a successful conclusion.

Manchester United are close to finally agreeing a deal to sign long-term target Ezequiel Garay.

According to Portugese newspaper Abola, the 27-year-old is on the cusp of signing an agreement to join United at the end of the season.

It’s claimed that United were keen to bring in the former Real Madrid star now, but they’ve been given money off the transfer by holding off until the summer.

The deal is reportedly in the region of £8m. He seems like a decent player but we think that, with all the quality veteran defenders at Manchester United, David Moyes would be better off spending his cash on younger player who can be eased into the side more gradually.

Rio, Vidic and Evra may be well into their 30s but they surely still have much to offer Manchester United over the next year – not only in terms of game time but also to educate the youngsters and impart their wealth of knowledge on the team.

With 18 caps for Argentine since his debut in 2007 he has been in and out of the national side. But he does look like a solid and no-nonsense, if unspectacular, potential addition to the Manchester United set up.

Let’s see a clip. Manchester United fans – good signing, if it happens?
