United to start Jan with double raid?

Whilst we think that David Moyes has many virtues as a man we really hope that he doesn’t become too cautious as a coach.

We know that he’s not the sort of guy that generally throws caution to the wind. But when he took over at Manchester United he must surely have been reminded that winning isn’t enough at this club. Style and the manner of the performances are equally important to the overall perception of success at Manchester United.

So far Moyes has bought a defensive midfielder for £27.5m. He has also been linked, albeit without any official substance, to several other defensively minded midfielders over the last couple of months.

Now, with 12 days to go until the window opens, Manchester United are being linked with two defenders from Porto – Alex Sandro and Eliaquim Mangala.

The Independent says:

Manchester United are lining up Porto’s Alex Sandro for a January transfer as their ongoing pursuit of Leighton Baines has continued to be frustrated.

…The 22-year-old was one of a number of potential transfer targets that Moyes saw in action when he attended Atletico Madrid’s Champions League game against Porto.

Alex Sandro has been at Porto since his £8m move from Santos in 2011.

Meanwhile The Star says:

The new reports indicate Porto’s left-back and central defender are both being monitored by the Red Devils, with Moyes having been spotted watching on from the stands during Atletico Madrid’s 2-0 win over Porto recently.

They both look like good defenders – especially Mangala. But we hope that Moyes doesn’t spend the entire transfer on making Manchester United harder to score against.

Manchester United fans want more goals, better creative midfielders and a little more fairy dust in the squad. While there are some veteran defenders in the squad there are also lots of good youngsters like, Jones, Rafael, Fabio and Smalling. Jonny Evans has matured well and Rio and Vidic still have something to offer.

In short, Manchester United need to spend further up the pitch. Wouldn’t you agree?
