Is he worth the money for Manchester United?

If we were handed the keys to the Manchester United ‘war chest’ tomorrow and told we could spunk the lot on players, we would look to bring in a central midfielder and a winger, in that order.

If we could only get a winger we would pop Kagawa in the centre of the park. If we could only get a central midfielder we would let Adnan and Wilfried Zaha loose on The Premier League. Quite why Zaha isn’t getting a run out with Nani, Young and even Valencia under par, we couldn’t tell you.

But, since his first day on the job, David Moyes seems to have prioritised the signing of a left back. Patrice Evra obviously isn’t a spring chicken but he’s still doing a decent job for Manchester United and we think other areas should get prior attention.

But we aren’t the boss of Manchester United and he is. The Manchester Evening News suggests that if Manchester United want to seal the deal for their long-term target, Leighton Baines, they will have to cough up £20 million in the winter window.

The MEN says:

The long-term Reds target was subject of two failed bids of £10m and £12m in the summer transfer window but with relations between Everton and their former boss Moyes now strained, there will be no January move for the England star unless Moyes decides to spend big.

The question for Moyes is whether he considers paying £20m plus for a 28-year-old – who turns 29 next month – value for money, although his form for Everton continues to impress and he’s a certainty to go the World Cup with England in Brazil next summer.

It’s true that Baines has been mightily impressive for club and country this season. He definitely has a better delivery than Evra but he has reportedly going to cost around the same price as Robin van Persie cost Manchester United two years ago.

He’s an excellent player but we think Manchester United should be investing in the future rather than spending £20m on a defender who is about to turn 30.

Manchester United fans. What do you think? Is Baines worth the money?
