Oh for Manchester United to have a really top quality attacking midfielder once more. They have players who could do a job in the centre of midfield – Kagawa and Januzaj could be central creators. But for this very good side to be a great Manchester United side they surely need to buy a specialist – someone who can pull all the classy strings of the team.

David Moyes had the right idea during his pursuit of Cesc Fabregas. Although unproven in the Premier League Bayern München’s Thiago Alcantara would also have fitted in well.

Today it is being reported that Chelsea will struggle to hold on to Juan Mata and he could be tempted to leave the club due to a lack of first-team appearances this season.

Of all the players linked with Manchester United this guy could be the perfect fit. It’s hard to imagine Chelsea wanting to sell to Manchester United but if David Moyes could get this guy he should be snapping the hand off Jose Mourinho this January.

Even at £40 million it would be an absolute bargain. Because Mata has that rare quality of being able to unlock the door of any defence in Europe. He is a wonderful passer, has fantastic football intelligence and can do anything with the ball. He’s quick, agile, athletic and durable. Mata rarely gets injured and scores loads of goals.

Quite why Jose Mourinho doesn’t like him is a bit of a mystery to us. Perhaps he doesn’t think he has requisite physique to be a really top Chelsea player.

Either way The Star says today:

CHELSEA are facing a battle to keep Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham target Juan Mata at Stamford Bridge with PSG set to launch a £40m bid.

Mata is desperate to cement his place in Spain’s World Cup squad ahead of next summer’s finals in Brazil and the promise of first-team football may prove to hard to turn down.

Arsenal, Liverpool, United and Spurs have all been monitoring Mata’s situation with a view to stepping up their interest in the January transfer window.

It’s very hard to imagine a better player coming into Manchester United (or Arsenal or Liverpool for that matter) in January than Mata. Let’s see him in action. Manchester United fans would you spend £40m on this guy?
