Breaking: Manchester installed as favourites for shock defender swoop

A shock transfer?

Manchester United fans are waiting with bated breath, this winter, to see how David Moyes will reinforce his rattled champions.

Most want Moyes to go out and splurge big time on some creative talent – specifically midfielders who can add pace and precision to the engine room and provide better service for the brilliant strike force.

But rumours have also been rife, since Moyes took the reigns at Manchester United, about the manager’s desire to strengthen the defence. Some, apparently including David Moyes, feel that the left-back slot needs bolstering most urgently.

But, in some slightly left-field news this morning, bookmakers SkyBet have installed Manchester United as favourites for the signature of Fulham’s Norwegian international defender Brede Hangeland.

Hangeland has been a rock for club and country, turning out 89 times for Norway (4 goals) and 202 times for Fulham, since he joined from Copenhagen in 2008.

But, at 32 years of age, this move could only ever be a short-term signing. With Rene Meulensteen now managing Fulham, Manchester United could well have the upper hand over other clubs, should they wish to bring Fulham players to the club. But we just can’t see this deal having any legs at all.

Nevertheless Hangeland has been installed as 10/1 favourite to join Manchester United in the winter window. So perhaps Sky know something we don’t.

Manchester United fans, do you need another veteran defender?
