The notion of signing him seemed fanciful just a few months ago. But with Borussia Dortmund having a terrible season in the league, there may well be a chance of bringing Mats Hummels to Manchester United in January.

Some media reports have suggested that Manchester United are indeed now confident of a deal taking place this month.

The Express reports:

MANCHESTER UNITED are confident that they can pull off a deal to bring Mats Hummels to the club in January.

Hummels remains one of Louis van Gaal’s top transfer targets as he looks to sure up his back-line.

The source suggests that the player will cost anywhere between £30-£50m. It’s a lot of cash but the lad is worth it – certainly £30m anyway. He’s highly sought after, is a complete defender and is about to come in to his pomp, at the age of 26.

If Rio Ferdinand was a Rolls Royce defender perhaps Hummels could be described as a Jaguar.

He’s maybe not quite a brilliant with the ball at his feet as Rio was. But he has a fantastic passing range, like the legendary Englishman and that quality more than anything is what Manchester United lack in the defence right now.

Few people would argue with the idea that Hummels would improve a defence which has some talented youngsters but has looked particularly shaky against top opposition and will need a leader in there if they are to succeed at home and in Europe next season.

Let’s see some Hummels class. United fans: top priority?

Man Utd would be very foolish not to try prise Hummels away from DORTMUND now , he’s only 25 & would cost cheap at £25 to £30 Million, he knows that utd will be in the champs league next season and that if he stays with DORTMUND he will be playing in the second division in Germany , he will also be attracted by an increased wage also, he’s not very injury plaqued like jones & Co at Utd , we also need a 2nd defender but for this jan transfer window Hummels will get us thru the second part of the season, Utd have a realistic chance of even winning the title this year when you consider we have 15 players injured with an unprecidented 53 injuries & we are still in 3rd place & once we beat Southampton on Sunday a clear gap will open up for the top 3 while Southampton, arsenal & Spurs fight it out for the 4th spot with Southampton my favourite to get that spot & knock arsenal out for the europeless league spot with arsenal prefered over Spurs , yes without a doubt I think that LVG will get his man this january and will also sign up DeGea for a 6 yr contract at the minimum unless they are using him as bait to get Bale , I hope DeGea stays for one more contract & just pay the market value for bale like they tried last summer, once we get in our final players this summer & with LVG’s tactics & man management utd are starting look very intimidating again especially so soon after MOYES nearly destroyed the whole team for years to come , WOODWARD was 100% right to get rid of him GGMU
