How Manchester United could spend another £150m plus in January

Money no object?

There are many factors which could affect Manchester United’s ability to buy some top players in January – but, after an almighty recent loosening of the purse strings, money doesn’t appear to be one of them.

We now get the sense that Manchester United will continue to spend their way out of trouble. With huge revenues and a massive appetite to return to the top, they spent around £150m in the summer and seem happy to pay top whack for the best players.

The new FIFA FairPlay legislation has helped no end in this respect. Where the new money of PSG, Monaco, Manchester City and Chelsea had flooded the market over the last decade, it’s all about revenue again now and this has saved Manchester United to a degree.

Here are the players that Manchester United would quite possibly love to add this month:

Mats Hummels: Reports suggest that he is valued somewhere between £30 and £50m by his club. Probably not worth the upper end of that estimation but would represent great value at £30m.

Seamus Coleman: A machine like right back who charges up and down the wing with effortless ease and has the sort of adventurous manner that Manchester United fans love to see in their defenders. Would suit a wing back role. Would easily cost £20m

Kevin Strootman: Tale of his arrival are getting as tedious as the Sneijder to Manchester United talk a few years back. But he would give the engine room real character again. Would maybe command £40m in transfer fee.

Ross Barkley: There has been little to no suggestion that Manchester United will make a move for the lad in January. But they simply must be interested in the young Englishman. He’s such an exciting player and one who has a rare combination of grit and guile. You would surely see little to no change out of £50m considering his youthfulness.

Diego Godin: We are very unlikely to see Godin switch clubs in January with Atletico still in The Champions League. But he would be a solid and classy addition tot he ranks. Would command around £25m in our estimates.

TOTAL: C£165m

Manchester United fans: who would you most like to see arriving in January?
