The Gunners have been linked with goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa. According to The Metro, his performances for Mexico yesterday against Brazil in The World Cup have put him on the radar as a potential transfer target.

Ochoa put in a fine performance, denying the host nation from scoring by making a number of excellent saves. His clean sheet against the likes of Neymar and Oscar have shown that he certainly has some talent.

Despite having 60 international caps the player is a free agent following the expiry of his contract with relegated Ajaccio. Before joining the Ligue 2 side he had made over 200 appearances for Mexican club América.

Arsenal are in need of a new goalkeeper following the departure of Lukasz Fabianksi to Swansea last month. That has left the North London side with just Wojciech Szczensy as their only senior goalkeeper.

It is therefore vitally important that they get some sort of backup in place so that they are not left with the prospect of having to play an inexperienced youth player should Szczensy have any injury or suspension problems.

They were believed to be targeting Costel Pantilimon whose contract with Manchester City was expiring in the summer. However, the player has since chosen to sign for Sunderland.

Any attempt by Arsenal to secure Ochoa’s signature could be difficult though as Liverpool are also reported to be interested. While they have two experienced goalkeepers in Simon Mignolet and Pepe Reina, it is widely thought that the Spanish Reina will be leaving Anfield. He would likely see his game time limited by the fact that Mignolet is seen as the established number one keeper.

Further impressive performances at the World Cup are only likely to increase the number of clubs looking to secure his services, meaning Arsenal and Liverpool might have to swoop sooner rather than later.

Ochoa has talent. He regularly produces jaw dropping displays, but he is also prone to tactical errors and a lack of focus. Which is why, despite his obvious ability, he is a free agent,

David Marshall is a better choice. So is Ospina, from Columbia.
