Arsenal’s move for Thomas Lemar could be hijacked by one of their rivals

Arsenal may be left to rue pulling out of a move for Thomas Lemar on Deadline Day in August, as they now face more competition than ever for his signature.

The Frenchman played a starring role in Monaco’s title win last season and is one of the few key men who remained at the Stade Louis II following that success.

However, it’s likely that the 22-year-old will follow Tiemoue Bakayoko, Bernardo Silva, Benjamin Mendy, and Kylian Mbappe out the door.

While he’s only contributed one league goal this term, interest remains high and the Telegraph report that Chelsea are the latest club ready to throw their hat into the ring.

The Gunners already feared that they could be pipped to the post by Liverpool, though they already have Premier League top scorer Mohamed Salah on the wing and summer signing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain can also operate there.

The emergence of Chelsea as a possible destination won’t go down well with Arsene Wenger, but Antonio Conte is willing to break his transfer record to spend £80million on Lemar.

All this could depend on whether the Blues are successful in their pursuit of Juventus left-back Alex Sandro, who is sometimes used by the Bianconeri as a winger.

Chelsea have slipped out of the title race thanks to shock defeats against Burnley, Crystal Palace, and West Ham, with Conte publicly blaming a lack of squad depth.
