Sergio Aguero did not need to surpass Eric Brook as Manchester City’s all-time leading goalscorer to cement his place in the club’s folklore.
The Argentine has scored 179 goals in his time at the Etihad, so his latest comments on his future will not be welcomed by Pep Guardiola.
Although the striker is under contract until 2019, he has revealed he plans to return to boyhood club Independiente when his current deal expires.
“The idea was always to go back to Independiente when my contract with City runs out in 2019,” he said, per the Mirror.
“I have an option to extend one more year with City where it’s the priority but it’s always an option.
“The idea is to go back. Now, I’m doing very well and hopefully we can win the cup [title], but it’s not easy.”
If City are aware that he plans to leave in two summers’ time, the newspaper claim it will only enhance their pursuit of Alexis Sanchez, and they could even opt to offload Aguero at the end of the current season.
Guardiola is already blessed with Gabriel Jesus in attack, with Kevin de Bruyne, Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane also chipping in with a combined 21 goals in all competitions.
Sanchez has been underwhelming for the Gunners so far this term, but City are still expected to move for him in January, when he will be available for a reduced price because of his contract situation.
