Aston Villa targeting one of Arsenal’s struggling defenders

Arsene-Wenger

Arsenal are bracing themselves for a defensive crisis after Shkodran Mustafi was ruled out for three weeks.

The Germany international managed just 25 minutes of the 3-1 win over Stoke City and will join Per Mertesacker in the treatment room.

All the same, it appears Arsene Wenger isn’t too worried, as he is set to loan out one of his other defenders to Aston Villa.

Steve Bruce wants to borrow Carl Jenkinson in January, reports the Sun, as he is hoping for more options at full-back to help Villa’s promotion charge.

Jenkinson’s injury problems have meant he’s never held down a first-team place at the Emirates, so Wenger hopes by sending him to Villa Park for the remainder of the season, he can put a run of games together, in a similar vein to Jack Wilshere at Bournemouth.

Hector Bellerin’s progress is another factor keeping him out of the starting XI, and his long-term future at Arsenal has been uncertain for a long time.

The 24-year-old has made just 38 league appearances in five years, so this could represent one last chance for him to impress.
