Tottenham are set to break a British record for attendance at a Champions League game, the club have revealed.
Spurs will welcome Monaco to Wembley on Wednesday in front of a crowd of over 80,000 people.
Club chairman Daniel Levy told their official website:
“This is going to be the best attended Champions League home game in Britain ever – what a way for us to mark our return to the competition.”
The Lilywhites will be playing their European games at the national stadium because White Hart Lane – in its last season – has a reduced capacity due to development works, so it doesn’t meet UEFA regulations.
Many of the 80,000 tickets were sold before Spurs even knew who they’d be playing, though many fans will no doubt have been hoping for more of a glamour tie.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men will face Monaco, CSKA Moscow, and Bayer Leverkusen in the group stages, which should give them a reasonable chance of progressing.
It’s all good news for Spurs, though, as next season all their home games will be held at Wembley while they wait for their new ground to be finished.
Rivals Arsenal’s biggest attendance in the Champions League was around 70,000, but that was when they were being hosted at the Old Wembley.
