Arsenal’s Mustafi hopes may have finally been ended

Arsenal fans waiting for an update on Shkodran Mustafi have finally got one, but it’s probably not the news they were hoping for.

Arsene Wenger, who seldom discusses transfer targets, has surprised the Emirates faithful by speaking publicly and fairly openly about his pursuit of the Germany international, although, of course, they would prefer it if he actually signed him.

The Gunners’ frustrations when it comes to this particular transfer have built up and built up, so it’s no wonder they are now considering other options, including West Brom’s Jonny Evans.

In fact, they may as well finally give up on ever seeing Mustafi in the red jersey of Arsenal after Valencia boss Pako Ayestaran put the rumours to bed once and for all.

“Mustafi is not for sale and will not be leaving the club,” he told the assembled media after a defeat to Las Palmas, a game which the defender missed through injury.

Ironically, that may be the closure Arsenal needed. It should now spur them on as they race against the clock to sign a defender who will hopefully allow them to forget all about Mustafi.
