Manchester United may be confident of signing Paul Pogba this summer, but Jose Mourinho has identified an alternative just in case the Frenchman opts for Real Madrid.
The Manchester Evening News are reporting that Blaise Matuidi is Mourinho’s back-up option, as nothing can be taken for granted with Pogba.
United fans may feel somewhat disappointed if that is the way things turn out and rightly so.
While Matuidi is a competent midfielder, Pogba is on the move because he is in huge demand and is set to become the world’s most expensive player at some point over the course of the transfer window.
Matuidi, on the other hand, is effectively being forced out of Paris Saint-Germain, despite being a regular in France’s national team.
New boss Unai Emery has recently signed Hatem ben Arfa and Grzegorz Krychowiak, which essentially leaves no room for Matuidi in the midfield.
Ordinarily, in those circumstances, the 29-year-old would be an unlikely target for United, but he has the same agent as Pogba in Mino Raiola, so it may once again be he who is pulling the strings.
