Lionel Messi linked with Premier League club

Lionel Messi has been drawing attention to himself for all the wrong reasons lately.

On Wednesday, the Barcelona superstar was handed a 21-month sentence for tax evasion, though under Spanish law he will not serve any jail time because it’s a first offence and is under the 24-month threshold.

But as if Messi doesn’t already have enough on his plate, he could now be faced with a dilemma over whether to swap La Liga for the Premier League.

His father Jorge has been spotted by the Sun on a yacht speaking to Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich.

While that seems a little tenuous, it seems now could be the time when Messi is finally ready to quit Barca, the only club he has ever played for.

The same paper report that the Argentinian feels Barcelona officials haven’t been supportive enough throughout his court case and brushes with the law.

Chelsea are one of the few clubs who would be able to spend the £100million + it would take to prise him away, though Manchester City could also be alerted if Messi gave the green light.

The one criticism of Messi, when compared with his great rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, has been that he may not be able to perform well in any league in the world, as he gets a lot of protection from referees in Spain.

Ronaldo has shown he was more than capable in the Premier League, so Messi may relish the opportunity to finally silence his doubters with what would be a mouth-watering move to Stamford Bridge.
