Tottenham have offered Inter Milan £38million for striker Mauro Icardi, according to Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport.
Spurs are considering a number of options up front, having already tabled a bid for AZ Alkmaar frontman Vincent Janssen.
Lilywhites boss Mauricio Pochettino is desperate to bring in some support for fatigued forward Harry Kane, who was thoroughly disappointing at Euro 2016.
Much of Kane’s poor summer has been blamed on the fact that for the last two seasons, Tottenham have been completely dependent on him, so if he doesn’t recover his best form in time for August, Spurs will have a big problem.
Icardi would go some way towards rectifying that, though it will not be easy to sign him, with Atletico Madrid also waiting in the wings.
The La Liga side have already bid £29million for the Argentinian, and as both Spurs and Atleti are managed by his compatriots, it will be hard for him to choose between the two.
What is most noticeable about Spurs’ bid is that it is £8million higher than their previous club record of £30million, which they paid Roma for Erik Lamela.
At the very least, even if Icardi doesn’t move to north London, they’ve made a pretty big statement of intent.
