IT COULD be Real Madrid, it could be Paris St Germain, but it’s appears almost inevitable Eden Hazard won’t be wearing a Chelsea shirt next season.
The brilliant Belgian playmaker only signed a new five and a half year deal at Stamford Bridge a year ago but we all know contracts in football mean nothing these days and Hazard’s focus has clearly not been fully with the Blues for some time, as highlighted by his untimely revelations on the eve of arguably Chelsea’s biggest game of the season.
Four FourTwo reports: Hazard, who has endured a miserable season after being named Footballer of the Year, astonishingly admitted he would not be able to turn down the super-rich French giants in the build-up to Chelsea’s Champions League round of 16 clash with them.
Hazard, 25, who has only scored one goal this campaign – a penalty against MK Dons in the FA Cup – made the revelation to French newspaper ‘Le Parisien’ saying: “It’s hard to say no to PSG, as with all teams capable of winning the Champions League.”
And when asked about his future he hardly sounded committed to Chelsea, adding: “I do not know, because there is always uncertainty in football.”
Those comments came just days after Hazard indicated it would be a dream to work under his childhood idol, Zinedine Zidane, who was recently appointed manager of Real Madrid.
These recent ‘come and get me’ statements suggest a player desperate for a move and, while Hazard’s stunning form of last season was a huge factor in Chelsea’s success, there seems little point in keeping a player who clearly doesn’t want to be there and as a result isn’t performing.
It’s no secret the defensive side of Hazard’s game can be exposed in the Premier League, he clearly doesn’t enjoy having to track back and work hard without the ball. The less hectic pace and more open nature of the Spanish and French leagues would certainly appeal to him and we think Chelsea would be better off selling the Belgian in the summer while they can still get top money for him and begin looking for a replacement who is committed to the club.
What do Blues fans think? Accept the situation and move on or is he too good a player to let go so easily?
