A ‘couple of situations’: Everton manager Roberto Martinez lifts the lid on January transfers as the market begins to hot up

Big month?

We have seen the first flurry of January transfer activity in The Premier League today as Liverpool and Newcastle have done, or are close to doing, business.

And there is always something of a domino effect in these transfer windows as the first couple can regularly lead to far more.

Everton themselves have made the deal for defender Matty Foulds official while Shani Tarashaj has also joined the club, before being loaned straight back out to his Swiss side, Grasshopper Club Zurich.

And, as usual, Roberto Martinez was pleasantly candid about what is happening in terms of further transfers for Everton this month. He said:

“We’ve been working really, really hard to get some business (done) really early. Shani Tarashaj was our target number one in terms of doing it quickly.

And in terms of further additions to the squad in January, Martinez stated:

“We’ve got a couple of situations that could happen. The shape of the squad is going to be determined in the last week of the window and we want the squad to be stronger than it is now.”

And, as for the mooted departure of Aiden McGeady, the Everton boss said:

We’re going to work together with Aiden and his representative and we’re going to make the right call. There’s been three enquiries and it’s going to be over the next couple of weeks that we’re going to make the final decision.

And there it is. The expected deluge in the last week of the window could happen again as the staring contest ends and managers and clubs get deals over the line.

Everton have a brutal week in prospect as they play Manchester City at The City of Manchester Stadium at 19:45 GMT on Wednesday, before travelling to a rejuvenated Chelsea side on Saturday.

Everton fans: what does the team need most in the remaining 3 weeks of the window?
