The headline might suggest bad news for Chelsea, but that’s not the case.

Because the highly respected French media outlet, L’Equipe is stating that Drogba will retire from MLS action with Montreal Impact at the end of this season to perhaps join the Chelsea backroom staff. They say (via The Independent)

Didier Drogba confirms discussions under way as rumours suggest Ivorian is set to join Chelsea backroom team

Drogba has the same sort of status at Chelsea as Thierry Henry at Arsenal or Ryan Giggs at Manchester United. It doesn’t matter if he is an absolutely useless coach because his mere presence will inspire the squad.

The word ‘legend’ gets thrown around too generously but it certainly applies to Droggers.

The 37 year old played twice for Chelsea in two different spells. He scored 164 goals in 381 games and generally bruised the opposition for Chelsea in amazing seasons at the club.

Our defining memory, apart from the catalogue of physics-defying goals, was his presence in the FA Cup Final between Manchester United and Chelsea in 2007. Drogba was the difference that day in a match where there was so little between the sides in terms of quality. But the Ivorian was a constant threat and popped up in extra time to take the trophy.

If he does return to the club as a coach it can only be good news for Chelsea.
