The sacking of Rafa Benitez from Real Madrid could certainly not be described as a surprise.
The Spanish giants are notorious for their short tempers where it comes to managers and have disposed of 13 of them in the last 16 years.
But it’s difficult not to view their strategy of hiring and firing as a little ‘scattergun’ to say the least.
Few Real Madrid fans wanted Carlo Ancelotti to leave the club, less than a year after he had led them to that hitherto elusive Decima in The Champions League.
And the acquisition of Rafa Benitez – a well known pragmatist and a manager meticulous in his defensive preparations – seemed even more strange for a club with such attacking traditions.
Now, no sooner than the dust has settled on a record 10-2 victory for Los Blancos, Rafa has been fired.
It’s rather foolish to suggest that anyone could ‘feel sorry’ for a Real Madrid manager. The severance package alone would be greater than many a lifetime wage in the ‘real world’.
But we don’t have a huge amount of faith in Zidane getting past 6 months in charge of Real Madrid. Here is a young coach with very little elite level experience as a manager and a man who is being likened to Pep Guardiola already – no pressure then!
For our money Real Madrid look as if they are imploding again. If he is still available by then, we can see Madrid begging Jose Mourinho to sort out the mess come the summer.
