It’s a subject which draws fierce debate and noone knows for sure who it will be.
But it seems increasingly evident that Louis van Gaal is now being viewed as the interim measure – the ship steadier – before Manchester United appoint someone who they hope will bring more long-term success to the club.
And if Manchester United continue on this trajectory they could part company with Louis a year early, at the end of this season.
So who will take the reins?
GARY NEVILLE
His chances of taking the hot seat will of course depend on how he fares in his first proper management role at Valencia.
But he does seem to us to be the most natural choice for the top job at Manchester United. There would be a certain amount of risk in giving the job to someone with so little experience. But with that risk comes the chance to employ another empire builder – a man who loves the club and can lead them to long-term glory a la Fergie.
Strangely, Neville recently ruled himself out of the running for the Manchester United job. But we think that this ws simply as a mark of respect to Ryan Giggs, who many feel is the manager in waiting. Louis van Gaal has said as much.
RYAN GIGGS
The favourite of many to succeed LvG. Giggs is a Manchester United legend and would immediately command respect. But is he outspoken and noisy enough to make himself heard? We think that his future lies at Old Trafford but would love to see him manage in tandem with the likes of Scholes and Neville.
6/1
DIEGO SIMEONE
We love this guy and feel that he has the perfect skill set for Manchester United. He’s tactically clever, meticulous and passionate.
16/1
CARLO ANCELOTTI
A safe pair of hands. Hired gun. Call him what you like, Ancelotti’s record speak for itself and he has the composure to succeed at a top club.
4/1 favourite
PEP GUARDIOLA
There has been lots of Pep speculation and few fans would argue if he joined the club next summer.
5/1
JOSE MOURINHO
May soon be out of a job and would make a very interesting choice of manager. Many feel that he should have been appointed immediately after Sir Alex left Manchester United.
