We have fielded an awful lot of comments from Manchester United fans who say that Memphis is turning out to be the next Nani.
But, at just 21 years of age, we think that this is a very unfair tag to bestow on a super talent.
And these detractors should also remember that Cristiano Ronaldo was a hugely frustrating player at times in his early United career – to the regular ire of Roy Keane.
We would stick our neck out and say that Memphis is going to become a world star at Manchester United, on the pitch as well as in the merchandise stores.
But Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has been answering questions about the player’s form – and specifically if he has been dropped because of a lack of it:
“Of course, because otherwise he was still in the team. Otherwise I don’t look for another solution and I look for another solution in my team and I have kept Jesse Lingard and Andreas Pereira for example for that option and now he has to fight back and he does it, so I am satisfied.”
The boss did state that Depay has been looking good in training and that:
“Sometimes they are out of the selection because their competitor is in that moment in a better shape but that doesn’t mean that I have a quarrel with the player,”
And, with Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial likely to miss the Watford game this lunchtime, there is a sense that LvG will select him today.
We genuinely hope that he plays as he will offer the sort of pace that this Manchester United side is short of.
So much is expected of the youngster but Manchester United fans should be patient because we feel that the Dutchman represents the future of the club.
