Louis van Gaal is becoming increasingly indiscreet about the identity of the next manager of Manchester United.
On signing Anthony Martial The Guardian reported that Louis van Gaal said:
“I have not bought Martial for me, I have bought him for the next manager of Manchester United.” With a nod to Giggs, he said: “I feel I am introducing the next manager of Manchester United.”
And Sir Alex has given the idea full endorsement by saying:
“If Ryan Giggs had retired at, say, 35, it is quite likely I’d have made him my assistant,” says Ferguson. “And quite likely he could have moved right into the job as he is doing with Louis van Gaal at the moment.
“But I would never ask a player to quit.”
But, with Manchester United sometimes taking one step forward and two back under Louis van Gaal, what are the chances of Giggs being fast-tracked to the top job a year early?
At this point in time Manchester United are like a classic Bentley which doesn’t work properly. And, however much Louis van Gaal inspects it, however much he spends on it, he can’t quite figure out what’s wrong.
And, with a year and a half left on his contract, we have to at least begin to entertain the possibility that he may never get it purring again.
After so much investment in the last 18 months, Van Gaal can’t complain about a lack of finance or backing from the board. The recent talk of Neymar to Manchester United shows that money is not an issue.
But United aren’t progressing quickly. In fact they aren’t really doing anything quickly. It’s all so slow and predictable.
Look down the road to City and you see football of bewitching pace. But Manchester United continue to play the game more like a chess amateur. Slow, calculated and cagey build up play which allows the opponent to get back into position every time United have the ball.
On Sunday Arsenal weren’t ever in trouble.
It seems only a matter of time before Ryan Giggs comes in and we wonder whether there is any point in waiting another season.
Because, under Louis, Manchester United may continue their slow, almost imperceptible progress without winning anything.
At least with Giggsy at the helm the players would be happier to take risks, turn forward when they get the ball and play with the sort of tempo that the fans are accustomed to.
Because it’s all just a bit of a slog at the moment.
Manchester United fans: time for Giggs?
