Some players thrive under the leadership of LvG and others suffer.
We genuinely hope that the former category applies to Memphis Depay.
He was, after all, given his chance by LvG for Holland at last year’s World Cup, and performed brilliantly.
But LvG has clearly been displeased by certain aspects of the youngster’s game so far this season.
Memphis was hooked at half-time against Liverpool and also substituted after an hour against Wolfsburg in the week.
While he is obviously still learning the ropes, we believe that his substitution on Wednesday signalled a loss of impetus and control for Manchester United.
Yes, he still gives the ball away too easily and makes the wrong pass at times.
But this is a top level footballer who demands the close attention of one and regularly two opponents. He keeps the opposition on the back foot because he persistently probes and attempts to penetrate the back line.
As soon as he went off Wolfsburg took a forward step and Manchester United were lucky, in the end, to see the game out.
Until that point Manchester United were comfortable and hopefully Louis will see that Memphis offers far more than an inconsistent final ball to this Manchester United side.
Memphis is a great out ball with his pace and close control. He is a wonderful athlete who never stops moving. And he provides goal threat as his tally of 3 so far this season suggests.
Louis needs to nurture this wonderful talent and keep him on side to get the best out of him.
Manchester United fans: Was Louis right to substitute Memphis?
