Manchester United vs Wolfsburg, MatchDay 2, The Champions League, Old Trafford, 30 September 2015, 19:45
Manchester United XI: De Gea; Valencia, Smalling, Blind, Darmian; Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger; Mata, Rooney, Memphis; Martial.
Subs: Romero, Jones, McNair, Pereira, Young, Fellaini, Wilson.
With the other Premier League teams faring so poorly in Europe’s top club competition so far this season – the count is 5 defeats in 6 matches so far – Manchester United may end up carrying the baton for the country as the campaign progresses.
This of course brings back memories of 1999 when Manchester United, unfancied by many, stole the show with some amazing performances against the like of Barcelona, Inter and Juventus before a fluky win against Munchen in the final.
But United have a gargantuan journey ahead of them before they can even begin to think of such former glories.
After a tough start and defeat away to PSV, this game takes on crucial significance.
A home defeat, or even a draw, will leave Manchester United with a mountain to climb top get out of the group stages.
After fighting so hard to get back into the competition, this would be a nightmare.
But Manchester United have shown, of late, that they have the quality to beat anyone.
The consistency is also improving and we fully expect Manchester United to take the points at Old Trafford tonight.
But they must take the game by the scruff of the neck rather than waiting for things to develop and then reacting.
