Publicly Everton are saying that John Stones isn’t for sale.
And in an era where the big clubs seem to get their way more often than not, it will be great if Everton can stand firm and keep hold of one of their major assets.
But there are daily stories now about Everton’s interest in centre backs. Perhaps they are preparing themselves for the worst.
In truth, they need another centre back anyway, after the departure of the consistently excellent Sylvian Distin this summer.
Latest repots state that Everton are looking at Champions League winner Dante. The Express reports:
Everton in shock £6.4m swoop for ex-Man Utd target and Bayern Munich ace Dante
We have always considered this 31 year old to be a bit of a liability. He’s great going forward and obviously has genuine aerial presence.
But, every time we watch him, he drops a huge clanger.
He has the air of a David Luiz who can do something amazing one minute but then lets all the good work go to waste with a terrible back pass or a straight red.
But, with 13 caps and 2 goals for Brazil the lad certainly has experience and Everton may be looking for that, having lost Distin.
We think that Everton would do well to survey the market a little more before jumping in. But Dante could well be part of the solution in the defensive areas.
Let’s take a look at the lad in action.
Everton fans: worth a punt or is Dante a liability?
