We strongly believe that this Lucas Biglia to Manchester United rumour makes no sense at all – unless Louis van Gaal is about to pull one of his surprises out of the hat and ask the Argentine to play in another, crucial, position.
Because there are arguably several holes in the Manchester United squad – but the defensive midfield certainly isn’t one of them.
Even if Bastian Schweinsteiger never reaches full fitness and is a total failure – which we can’t see happening – then Manchester United still have Michael Carrick on top form and the highly capable Morgan Schneiderlin in the engine room.
And, lest we forget, Manchester United only played with one anchor man for most of last season.
So, particularly against the lesser sides, they can also revert to one defensive midfielder plus Herrera or Fellaini for example.
So there is simply no need for Biglia as a midfielder.
But, with the deal for Sergio Ramos looking unlikely and Manchester United seemingly not interested in Nicolas Otamendi, perhaps Louis sees Biglia as a Javier Mascherano-esque defensive solution for Manchester United.
Wikipedia says: ‘Biglia is known for his accurate passing and hard tackling’
Isn’t that exactly what Manchester United need at centre back right now?
A no nonsense, right footed defender who can also play the ball out of defence beautifully?
Javier Mascherano is 5ft 8.5in and has played in the midfield for most of his career.
But he has been superb in the defence for Barca, to prove that you don’t have to be schooled as a defender to become a top one.
At 5ft 10in Biglia, 29, could possibly do a great job and finally bring solidity and maturity to Manchester United’s defence.
For our money, this deal makes no sense unless Manchester United plan to use Biglia as a centre back. And wouldn’t that just be typical of Louis’s unconventional style?
