Manchester United seem to have an awful lot of money right now but nowhere to spend it.
Most of the summers over the last 20 years have involved Manchester United chasing players who are ultimately too expensive, or they join another giant of the European game.
But, this summer appears different. Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is good at keeping his cards close to his chest but, when you look around the market, there aren’t too many obvious, top quality additions that United can make.
They need creators and there is a definite dearth of top ones.
We have been championing the cause of Marco Reus to Manchester United for months but LvG seems unmoved by the prospect.
So how about making a last minute move for Kevin de Bruyne?
At £50m, or thereabouts, he does seem on the expensive side.
But if he can get anywhere near the 16 goals and 27 assists that he made last season then he will surely be worth it.
Because Manchester United look extremely difficult to beat this season already.
But whether they have enough going forward to score goals against top teams is very debatable.
The player himself has said this evening that he will be playing for Wolfsburg this season. But an offer from Manchester United would surely tempt anyone.
We think that one more marquee signing is required this summer.
The Pedro trail has gone a little quiet and he may not be enough, alone, to take Manchester United to the attacking level that they will require in Europe.
But, at 24, De Bruyne offers pace, precision and creativity in bucket loads.
Perhaps he simply isn’t LvG’s cup of tea.
But we think that Manchester United could spend their money on far worse players than the brilliant Belgian.
Let’s see him in action.
