Many Manchester United fans assumed that the defence would be the first area of investment for Louis van Gaal over the summer.

And he has indeed added right back Matteo Darmian and Sergio Romero so far.

And with only 37 goals conceded in the league Manchester United’s record was not far off that of Chelsea (32).

But the manner of the defending wasn’t always great and reports have resurfaced today about the potential signing of a player who has been linked to Manchester United more than most this summer.

Talksport reports:

Manchester United are very close to signing Argentina centre-back Nicolas Otamendi, according to reports from Spain.

But The Express says that fierce rivals Manchester City could be in for him:

Valencia’s Nicolas Otamendi just days away from completing £35m move to Man United or City

Whoever gets the Argentina international will be doing great business but we just can’t understand why Manchester United didn’t make a serious move earlier in the summer transfer window.

The Sergio Ramos deal was always going to be virtually impossible to complete and Manchester United may pay for their indecisiveness with Otamendi if Manchester City do indeed complete the transfer.

The player’s release clause is apparently 50m Euros. But there still appear to be takers and it’s clear to see why.

So do UEFA know something we don’t?

What’s too much in buying Otamendi with just £35m?

We need a centre forward capable of receiving and completing balls from depay, rooney, Januzaj, fellaini, hererra, schneiderlin.
