Despite the decent signings for Manchester United so far, unless another superstar is signed before September, this will be seen by many fans as a disappointing summer in the market.
Because the likely loss of Angel di Maria is drawing ever nearer.
The Press Association (via Sky Sports) reports today that he’s close to completing his move:
Angel Di Maria is set to have a medical in the next 24 hours ahead of his move to Paris Saint-Germain, according to the Press Association.
The fee has seemingly been agreed at £44m which represents something approaching a £25m loss (in fees and salary) for having the Argentine at Manchester United for just a year.
It would be unfair to blame Louis van Gaal for this mess.
At the time of Di Maria’s signing, most fans were extremely excited about the addition.
But no one could have envisaged how badly he would go off the boil at Manchester United after his family was subjected to an attempted burglary.
Perhaps Louis should have given him more game time in the second half of the season. When he did come off the bench he did ok but his confidence was clearly low after being regularly overlooked in favour of Ashley Young.
The most disappointing aspect is that Manchester United are selling a player whose skill set they are desperate for in a squad which lacks pace.
Football can be a strange old game at times.
