Not Benzema: The stellar centre forward signing that Arsenal director is suggesting Arsene wants to bring to The Emirates?

Just as we were beginning to notice a lull in Arsenal transfer speculation one of the directors makes a curious statement about Arsenal’s bank balance.

In the style of Harry Enfield’s Loadsamoney character Lord Harris said:

We could go into the market and probably buy any player in the world, apart from half a dozen who are un-buyable. In the accounts, there’s over £200m in the bank.

He went on to suggest that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is looking at a specific striker:

On the list is a centre forward, but I’m not going to tell you who he is. You’ve got to get the other team to want to sell him, but I think he wants to come. It basically comes down to whether the other team can find a superstar to replace him, because they don’t have to sell.”

Many people assume that this is Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema. But the Frenchman’s agent stated clearly this week that:

“Karim is very happy at Real Madrid and he will be a Real Madrid player by the end of this transfer window, 1,000%,”

“Karim is not looking to move anywhere this summer.”

So, unless the Arsenal director is just talking complete pony then he must be referring to someone else.

We believe that there is a real paucity of top quality out there, in terms of number 9s, right now and any deal would certainly break Arsenal’s current transfer record.

But two immediately spring to mind:

Edinson Cavani

We feel that he has never completely settled in France and, although he has scored at an excellent ratio (56 in 96), the Uruguayan has often been asked to play out of position as Zlatan has taken the central berth.

The notion that Ibrahimovic will leave PSG this summer may mean that Cavani won’t be allowed to leave but he would be a sensation at Arsenal.

Gonzalo Higuain

Not as good as Cavani in terms of his overall game but he’s still a master marksman and a player who could unlock the defences that Giroud et al can’t. He’s often been linked to Arsenal and the club could easily afford him, after Lord Harris’s cocky claims.

Let’s see Cavani in action.
