Highly respected source: Manchester United closing in on their 5th major summer signing with player minded to join

Pedro - class

Clever

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has pulled some surprises out of the bag this summer in the transfer market.

Few thought he would be able to prise Basti from Bayern. And Ramos from Real still isn’t completely dead in the water.

And latest reports suggest that he wants another excellent player from one of Europe’s elite clubs. The Guardian reports:

Manchester United poised to trigger Pedro’s £22m Barcelona release clause

The report states that while Chelsea are also interested the player himself would be ‘minded’ to join Manchester United.

10 days short of his 28th birthday and Pedro has pretty much won the lot – The World Cup and Euro Championship with Spain and The Champions League and La Liga with Barcelona.

He’s hit a highly respectable 98 goals in 318 appearances for his club and 16 in 51 for Spain.

Pedro only signed a new contract this summer but his release clause was, at the time, severely reduced and Manchester United are said to be keen to pay the buyout fee of around £22m.

Although Pedro isn’t the quickest winger in the world, he is supremely technically skilled and rarely gives the ball away.

He’s quite like Juan Mata in terms of his overall neatness and he’d be a great signing for any club.

But with Luis Suarez, Neymar and Lionel Messi ahead of him in the pecking order at Barca he just hasn’t been able to get regular game time, particularly over the last twelve months.

Let’s take a look at the lad in a action.

Manchester United fans: is this the sort of player to add balance to the side or is he too similar to what the squad already has.

Don’t ask us, ask van Gaal. Our opinion is irrelevant.

When is United going to close the Nicholas Otamendi deal. We need him more than any other player we have purchased this season. Currently central defence is very weak
