Solid Spine

Tottenham have been successfully clearing the decks this summer before they make their own offensive on the transfer market. Etienne Capoue is the latest to be offloaded and many Spurs fans hope that players like Aaron Lennon, Roberto Soldado and Emmanuel Adebayor will be added to that list before too long.

And reports this week suggest that Tottenham are very close to signing Toby Alderweireld – a player who can make a huge difference to the Tottenham defence. The Times went as far as to state that:

Tottenham agree deal to sign Toby Alderweireld from Atletico Madrid

And Sky Sports reported earlier today that he has indeed had a medical at Tottenham.

This would be a great signing and we could imagine him and fellow countryman, Jan Vertonghen, shutting up shop next season in central defence.

But the spine needs strengthening further forward too, for our money.

We think Nabil Bentaleb is superb. While we also like Ryan Mason we wouldn’t necessarily hand him the baton every week just yet. Mousa Dembele is also a talented lad but doesn’t always produce consistently – he can, at times, look disinterested.

So we would like to see another midfielder come in and Tottenham have been linked, this week, with James McCarthy of Everton. He’s a good all rounder and a player who you can rely on. He’s athletic, vigilant, intelligent and a good passer of the ball. He’s be an excellent anchor man for Tottenham.

There will of course be other comings and goings. But, if Tottenham only get these two this summer, here is how they might line up come August.

Tottenham fans: a noticeably better side than the current one?

    Maybe better than the one we had but still plenty of room for improvement.

    If we get rid of more deadwood, there’s still a lot of money to be spent.

    Ideally, I think I’d like to see something like this:

    Lloris;
    Trippier, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Rose;
    Suarez, Bentaleb;
    Lavezzi, Eriksen, Shaqiri;
    Kane.

    I would be more then happy with this line-up minus Yedlin. Either Walker or Trippier would start IMO. Need one more striker and winger and we’re set.

    Not many see Yedlin ahead of Walker and Trippier but the rest of that team looks good, I’d start with Walker and would like to have a reserve XI of Vorm, Davies, Wimmer, Dier, Trippier, Dembele, Mason, Pritchard, Ferreira Carrasco, Shaqiri and Chicharito. Perhaps slightly wishful to get all those players and we’ve got to first ship out a lot of dead wood but that would be a deep high quality squad not even including youngsters like Yedlin, Winks, Velkjovic and Carroll who could easily break into the setup. It’ll be another long tiring season but if we have this strength and quality in depth we may well deliver on our target of top 4 and a trophy.

    No way will Yedlin be starting, it will be Trippier…

    I like that it’s a picture of Wembley (optimistic)
