The fact that Manchester United have seemingly passed up the opportunity to sign Nathaniel Clyne for right back next season leaves more questions than answers.
With Antonio Valencia doing no more than a moderately decent job there and Manchester United target Dani Alves signing a new contract at Barcelona – Ramosesque – we thought that a move for Clyne would be a no-brainer.
But the lad looks set for a move to Liverpool, with Manchester United seemingly not getting involved in the bidding process.
But we just wonder whether Louis’ relaxed approach to the right back berth is the precursor to a surprise selection there next season.
Rafael da Silva has had a shocking time with injury over the last two seasons. So much so that, in the few games he has played, he’s looked more rash and rusty than ever.
Few have ever questioned his talent. But the big concern has always been whether he can iron the impetuosity out of his game. Whether he can stop charging in to the back of the opponent in dangerous positions on the park.
It’s a bad foible for a defender, but certainly not a hard one to extinguish.
And, at his best, Rafa is one of top right backs in the league. Sir Alex once said of the lad:
“I can definitely see Rafael going on to have the kind of career that Gary Neville had with us. There’s no doubt about it.
“His form this season has been brilliant. He’s tougher now.
“Gary came to us as a centre-back and wasn’t the finished article when he came into our team. Gary became a fantastic full-back, perhaps the best this club has ever had.”
Fergie added: “Rafael is perhaps more naturally talented than Gary. But he was making mistakes in games. Now we are all hoping that maturity will come along and the rashness disappear.”
We have always been big fans of Rafael da Silva – he’s aggressive, athletic, skillful and has that true, buccaneering Manchester United spirit.
At 24 he’s coming into his prime and he might just save the club £20m plus this summer. While it may come as a big surprise to some, we could see Louis starting with him next season, with Antonio Valencia in reserve.
Let’s remind ourselves of the spectacular talents of the lad. Manchester United fans: can he make a comeback at the club?
