Solid as a rock

Folowing on from rumours last week, The Telegraph reports that Tottenham are closing in on a deal for the Atletico Madrid defender Toby Alderweireld.

This would undoubtedly be a good signing for Tottenham who have never really got their defence sorted over the last five years.

We are big fans of Jan Vertonghen and the idea of him teaming up with his fellow countryman in the heart of the defence makes a whole lot of sense – to a Flemish speaker at least.

But, seriously, with genuine pace from full backs like DeAndre Yedlin, Danny Rose and Kyle Walker, the defensive unit could well be completed by this addition because we are great admirers of the 26 year old.

He had an impressive season last year at Southampton – his first in English football – and he has assimilated into The Premier League almost seamlessly.

He’s at a great age to form a lasting partnership with Vertonghen and this, more than any other signing, could see Tottenham properly press for Champions League football in the coming season.

Let’s take a look at the lad in action. Tottenham fans: is this the signing to finally make the defence watertight?

I think Soton’s defence has rather flattered Alderweireld, he was never close to Verts quality at Ajax (and Verts still has some weaknesses in his game and he rarely scratched the surface of AM’s team. I’m far more convinced by the midfield defensive coverage and the ability of their other defenders than Alderweirelds ability, so I disagree that it would “undoubtedly” be a good signing, quite the contrary I have doubts ands believe there are much better options for CB

I watched the games this guy played in and Southampton were flying. The moment he got injured they began to fall apart. One game of particular interest is one at the Emirates where it was 0-0 until until the 85th minute when Toby got injured and came off. That’s when Arsenal managed to score. So I Would rather have him than Fazio as he is a cert upgrade to Fazio or what we have besides Vert.
