This one will initially come as something of a shock to many Chelsea fans. While some expensive, a-list talent has been linked to Stamford Bridge over the last few months, reports today suggest that they could be about to sign a player who could cost £5m or less.
At 27 Alex Song was, for our money, one of the stand out players in The Premier League last season. His technically ability and presence in the centre of the park propelled West Ham into the higher echelons of the division and his signing was yet another masterstroke from Sam Allardyce – which makes his sacking even more difficult to fathom.
But this could work out to be a bargain for Chelsea. Mourinho is clearly looking for more depth in the midfield and, having played at the top level in England with Arsenal, and for Barcelona, you feel that he would have no problems stepping into the Chelsea fold.
Highly respected British media outlet, The Telegraph, reports that Chelsea are in talks with the lad:
Chelsea hold talks over move for Song
Jose Mourinho has done some fantastic wheeler dealing over the last two years, as the UEFA FairPlay sanctions have restricted their previously lavish spending plans.
Song could well represent another coup for a top talent who wouldn’t be too pricey to bring to the club. At 27 he’s at the peak of his powers and would surely be seen as a masterful signing at the end of next season.
Let’s take a look at the lad in action.
